# Time

Introducing the timestamp in the block header.

## What is Block Time

Block time is a field in the block header used to record the timestamp when a miner created the block. It represents the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 (the UNIX epoch).

## Functions of Block Time

1. **Timestamp Verification**: Block time is used to verify the chronological order of transactions, ensuring that transactions are recorded on the blockchain in the correct sequence.
2. **Difficulty Adjustment**: Block time plays a crucial role in the difficulty adjustment algorithm of the Bitcoin network, affecting the balance of block generation time.
3. **Preventing Replay Attacks**: The timestamp helps prevent replay attacks, ensuring that transactions are valid within a reasonable time frame.

## Calculation and Verification of Block Time

### Calculation

When miners create a new block, they record the current time as the timestamp in the block header.

### Verification

When nodes validate a block, they check whether the block time is within a reasonable range, typically requiring the timestamp to be within 2 hours of the current network time.
